False Flag, 2025
Cotton warp and vinyl weft
54” W x 51” H
False Flag evokes the deceptive ambiguities of human expression by reimagining the familiar motif of a smile. Woven from two distinct photographs, the work fragments the smile into a garbled and less legible image, disrupting its clarity. The structure of organic cotton warp entwined with synthetic vinyl weft mimics the interplay between sincere emotion and artificial facades. Reflecting our era of curated personas, this work probes the tension between authenticity and performance, revealing the smile as both a genuine bid for intimacy and a potential mask—what we express is not always what others perceive.
